Ways To Put Kids To Bed

September 30th, 2008 | Article by trueyou2 | Family

Ways To Kids To Bed

Everyone has their own ways to putting their kids down for naps and to bed at night; well, I just thought I would list the ways that I do it.

1. Make sure before bed that they are clean, as in giving them a bath! Make bath time a fun time, where they can play with bath crayons, or whatever toy they choose to take along with them to the bath tub. I have had my 2 kids play in the tub for 30-45 minutes just to wear them out. I also, like to use lavender bath oil to help them relax, Johnson and Johnson has a great line of relaxation products for kids and babies.

2. If you have school-aged children aged between 2-8; well, I like to keep them on a schedule. My 6 year old, when he gets off of the bus, he has a snack, does his homework, plays a videogame or best yet, we go outside and play soccer or just chase one another around in the yard, with his younger brother, we eat dinner at 5-6pm and around 7 pm (as stated in my number 1) take a bath. Than afterwards, he may either watch some cartoons on Cartoon Network or another cable station.

3. This one makes me laugh because it is odd. Well, for my youngest one (he‘s 18 months); only when he has trouble going to sleep. I do this maybe 2 times a month but he’s getting better about it. I like to take a drive around town mainly the country roads; where he can see pretty much the same thing, where it isn’t so busy. I’ll do that around 8 pm and he falls asleep within 10 minutes and than I drive back home and put him to bed. It never seems to fail. I know all parents have that special trick that only works for their children. I have a friend who would put their baby in the car seat and rock him to sleep. I couldn’t say anything because it worked for them.

Well, that is what I go through on a daily basis, except for on the weekends, (well, Fridays and Saturdays.) That’s a whole different story!

Fitness For Men Over 60 Years Old

September 30th, 2008 | Article by Giovanni Di Nardi | Fitness

Naturally, as we age, we slow down in many ways.  However, this doesn’t mean we can’t reap the benefits of a good exercise program.   You are never too old to exercise and improve how you look and feel.

The benefits of exercise are many.  A good fitness program helps us feel better, become energized, prevent disease, lower blood pressure, and extend our life expectancy.  A senior citizen doesn’t have to make exercise a difficult task, because there are many ways to work out and actually enjoy your routine.

Here are some starting tips for those Seniors contemplating an exercise program to tone their bodies and improve stamina.

Make a plan and set your goals.  Know what your objectives are going to be.  Do you want to tone your body or build it?  Start slowly, and gradually increase your routines when you feel you can handle it.

Be sure to incorporate a mild aerobic program upon starting your routine.  This will help improve your stamina and make it easier for you to deal with the routines designed to build and tone your body.

Always be consistent, try to exercise the same time each day to get your body used to your schedule.

Avoid using free weights if they are too taxing on your body.  You can achieve excellent results from using the various exercise machines designed to work all the major muscle groups of the body.

Don’t expect to see results overnight.  It takes time when your older for your muscles and body to react to the exercise.  Be patient, you should see results in about 60 days and you will look and feel better.

Jogging is an excellent form of exercise.  I usually spend at least 45 minutes on the treadmill, alternately walking and running.  This will also help you burn calories and fat.  It is a great way to lose weight and increase stamina.

Try to workout every other day for maximum results.  The day off in between allows your body to rest and recuperate.

Be persistent!  Try not to miss your workouts.  If your really tired or exhausted, skip your workout and then resume it the following day when you feel refreshed.  Don’t attempt to force your workouts when your tired.  Working out when your tired or under duress may cause injury.

Remember, there are personal trainers available for those interested in getting help or advice with their exercise program.  A good personal trainer can help keep you on track and maximize your efforts and overall results.

The benefits of exercise can keep you healthy, and increase longevity.  Get started today, your life depends on it!

Facing an Auto Repo

September 30th, 2008 | Article by buttermilk | Business and Finance, Cars and Trucks

I was ready for work, bathed, nicely dressed, and smelling good.  Mentally, I was going over the number of people whom I would visit that day.  I would be making house calls as usual.  As I stepped outside into the morning air, I headed for my van.  Imagine the confusion and surprise when I saw an empty car stall.  “A theft had occurred while I slept!” “Who had taken my van?” were the first thoughts that raced into my mind.  Without any further rational reasoning, I rushed into the house and telephoned the police.  Over the phone I heard the shocking response, “Your car has been repossessed.  When was the last time you paid your car note?   We are sorry, but you must contact the people who are financing your auto.”

I hung up the phone with a withered spirit.  I had played the game of delaying my car payments too long, and now it had caught up with me, and I was facing an auto repossession for the first time.  “How would I go to work?”  “To whom could I turn, being the only person in my family way out there in the state of California?  Feeling very chagrined, , the only thing I could do was to call the the finance company and make quick arrangements to get my van back.  Fortunately,  I was able to make the arrangements and retrieve my van back the next day.

Auto repossessions are not foreign to many people, but they are necessary to make debtors to banks and auto finance companies realize how dear their cars, van,s or trucks can be.  When one invests the down payments and successive other payments into the purchase of a vehicle, but neglects to keep up with good faith payments, the banks and  finance companies have no other alternative but to take the prize possessions away until the buyer is able to keep their agreed to part of the bargain.

Some contend that it is illegal to repossess a car.  Others say it is legal.  It must have been legal in my case, because the police did not move a hand to get my car back. Instead they told me whom to call to set up payment arrangements. Had it been illegal, as I at first thought it was, they would have come out to my apartment and gotten a police report.

I had an occasion to talk with a gentleman whose job was repossessing vehicles.  He said it was very dangerous, and he could actually be killed if caught in action.  Most of the repossessions occur without the knowledge of the buyer of the vehicle.  In some cases the repo is made easy when it is an agreed course of action, and that is rare.   The gentleman told me they did most of their repo’s at night.  It takes two or three people to pull it off.  First they go to the address where the they believe the vehicle is parked.  They check to see if it is there.  If it is there, they wait until a time of night when they believe the owner will be asleep.  They have several plans in place to get the car, truck or van.  One or two people serve to be on the lookout, while the other person goes to the vehicle, checks to see if all is clear, disarms the alarm, if there is one, and then drives off with the car.  If there is an privately  installed alarm, they cannot execute the repo without alerting the owner.  He said it is very tricky work, but the pay for one night’s work is excellent.

That was not much consolation for anyone like me, who fell back in their payments.  But it does show me that there is justice in the automobile finance market, and the rules of the game will be played correctly or someone will suffer the consequences.

I’ve had friends who have suffered like fate.  However, what makes one have goose bumps on the flesh occurs when a car, van or truck is almost paid for, and suddenly it is repossessed for a few hundred dollars being owed.  If the owner has no way to scrape together the payments, the vehicle will be sold on an auction and the bank or  fianance company will be the winner.  In the case where there is a large amount still due, the vehicle is still sold at an auction.  If there is still an amount due from the original loan, the buyer is taken to court, sued, and the balance is charged to him/her.  It’s a vicious game, but those are the rules.

To add to the misery of an auto repo, there is also storage fees.  The tower exacts these on a daily basis.  Usually towers will charge a one week fee, but any additional days over are charged on a per diem basis.  The longer a car is stored on their property, the more owed.  If the owner cannot secure his/her vehicle over a short period of time, it is the option of the towing company to assume the bank or finance company will make arrangements to pay them, and they keep the car, or the owner will leave the car and the towing company will sell the car.   The power brokers become the fianance company and the towing company.

The best advice I can give anyone who cannot make car payments for any reason, is to squarely face off with your bank or  finance company.  Do not return to the car dealer.  After car dealerships get their money, they are hands off.   After all the paperwork is done, and the final agreement is made, you are in the hands of the lending institutions.  Go to them and talk.  Tell them your financial troubles.  Ask for extended payments in lesser amounts.   Most of them will help you, however, if they insist on getting the vehicle, bring it to them.  That will be better for you and you will avoid the embarrassment of feeling violated by a repo.

While at a car dealership once, a man came in and brought his car.  He told us, “They will have to take this car, because I lost my job and I can’t pay for it.”  I went a little further with him by asking, “Suppose they won’t take it back?”  He responded, “They don’t have to take it, but I’m leaving it here, and they will have to figure out what to do with it!.”  I laughed inside, but all I could say to him was, ”I know you’re right!”

If you see the avalanche coming down on you and your financed vehicle, get out from underneath it quickly.  Don’t let time and inaction cause you to become another automobile finance repossession victim.   You will be saved a lot of emotional misgivings and headaches.  Attack it before it attacks you, because “It ain’t pretty!”

I Remember When….

September 30th, 2008 | Article by billG | Culture and Society, Family, Other

Do you remember the lifestyle you lived when you were growing up? What was the status of the economy? What were some of the political issues? As I look back to my younger years, I have to wonder what we have done to ourselves. Let me explain:

I remember when a gallon of gasoline was $.19 per gallon and we didn’t even think about the price of a gallon of milk. The price of gas rose to $.25 in the early 1970’s and we didn’t blink an eye at the increase. We never stopped to consider that was a 31% increase in price. We really take note of a $.05 increase today.

I remember when my family left our house doors unlocked at night and when we were out for the day. There was not much concern about someone coming in and taking our life possessions. Alarms, steel bars, and advanced security systems are used today in most houses to reduce robberies.

I remember when a signature and a handshake were all that was needed to conduct business and get credit. The banker knew everyone in town and trusted them for repayment. We seldom see the banker today. Most transactions are done via the internet and e-mail and it seems like it takes an act of Congress to get a loan approved.

I remember helping the older folks put groceries in their cars or shovel snow from the walkway in the winter. Today they are easy targets of crime and frequent victims of assault from young street walking delinquents who have nothing better to do with their lives.

I also remember when blacks and whites were not allowed to attend the same schools, ride the same buses, or use the same public rest rooms. De-segregation resulted in riots all across the country, including the infamous Central High School situation in Little Rock, Arkansas. I am happy to say that there does seem to be progress in this area, although there is still much room for improvement.

Again, what have we done to ourselves? Our societal and cultural values and norms seem to have eroded over the last 20-30 years. In many ways we have managed to create ways to make gas prices steadily increase. Crime is out of control in some parts of the United States. Police officers and teachers no longer get the respect and recognition they deserve. We have created an environment in which the clock never stops. We are always in a hurry to do something or be somewhere, but seldom have time to help others. Road rage has replaced the courteous driver who would have taken the time to let you merge into traffic on the highway. There are still racial and cultural issues that need to be resolved.

It seems like it was a much simpler life 30 years ago, as compared to today. Our daily lifestyles took on a much slower pace. We trusted and looked after each other. The older generation was well respected. Perhaps slowing down a little during our daily routines, offering help to others, and trying to find solutions to economic problems will result in a more peaceful environment.

MMA: Meat Market or Legit Sport?

September 30th, 2008 | Article by Edgecrusher | Culture and Society, Fitness

As an amateur MMA fighter, plus someone who has been in and/or around the sport since 1996, I have seen a lot of criticisms thrown the sport’s way (most of it well-deserved), and some undeserved. The undeserved criticism usually is along the lines of MMA being a ‘dangerous sport’, the sport should be regulated/abolished (McCain, among other politicians, tried to drive it underground in the early-to-mid 1990s). As someone who’s been in the ring doing it, I can tell you that there is a degree of danger - after all, you’re in the ring with someone who does wanna beat-the-crap outta you. But, it’s safer than people make it out to be. The explosion of MMA on TV has made it less of a fringe sport, made it mainstream and accepted. I’ve seen more serious injuries on the gridiron (no matter what level of football) than in the ring or cage). Plus, there have been more deaths in football than in MMA. Both sports are violent by nature, football being more of a “collision sport”, and MMA being “hyper-combat”. Fights usually end in the first two rounds, while football is just straight-up endurance/battle of attrition for 60 minutes. Also, football has padding and a helmet, while MMA has 4 ounce gloves and a mouthpiece. MMA isn’t a meat market, as some make it out to be. It is a choice to get into it- although a lot of young men get in it with the idea of being a “tough guy”, having girls and fame. It’s tough to make a name in it, but it’s addictive. There’s lots of competition - it gets cutthroat at times. There is a sense of camaraderie and a type of brotherhood - since all the fighters go through the same trials and tribulations in their quest to be the best. Add to that, there’s few spots in the big-time. True, some devious things do happen behind the scenes in MMA, but it happens in the NFL- and at your job (and mine). To say that MMA is a meat market is an inane statement. It is violent, the guys are trained to beat each other senseless, but there is a camaraderie there. Everyone does (or should) know why they are there, and should be ready to face all of the challenges that present themselves with being a fighter (especially the financial and mental ones). Low pay in the amateur ranks, the amateurs pay their way in the fights/tourneys - In a recent tourney I was in, I paid my way in, and two others. I left the venue with $10 to my name. With the expansion of the sport, the perception of MMA fighters are changing from crazed, bloodthirsty weirdos to the average people we are. Plus, it is gaining big money endorsements - it will soon overtake pro wrestling in popularity and relevance. MMA does have the same problems as pro wrestling - promoters wanting financial success at any price, at times, at the expense of the athletes. There have been sad stories, especially in pro wrestling, which averages 10-15 known deaths a year. In MMA, there have been less than 10 deaths in the sport total. Technological advancements in fight equipment, and better organization in the sport has made it safer than ever. Plus, as stated before, most MMA fights don’t even go the distance - rarely the fights go past the 2nd round anyway.

In closing, there is plenty of evidence to support either side of this argument. With more TV expansion and exposure, the ‘meat market’ argument will die.

Is God Good?

September 30th, 2008 | Article by twinangel71 | Religion and Spirituality

If some one asked you, “is God good?”, what would you say?  Well, I guess that would depend on your belief on who or what your “god” is.  Is God some kind of force or energy? or is He a Being capable of showing emotions?  If you believe God is a force of some type then it can neither be bad nor good.  But, If you believe He is a Being, then He certainly is capable of being good.

What is “good” and what does it mean?  In our culture today, we overuse the the word “good”.  We say things like “my dog is very good” or “that was a good movie.”  Using the word good in these sentences is not bad but, do we really understand what the word “good” truly means.  Let’s look at Webster’s definition of the word.  Good is-”having the proper qualities, beneficial, valid; real, honorable, enjoyable, pleasant, virtuous, devout, kind, dutiful, and skilled.”  According to Webster’s definition and assuming we are talking about the God of the Bible, then yes, God is good

Now, let’s look at what God says about Himself in the Bible.  “the Lord is good and does what is right.” (Psalm 25:8) “Truly God is good to Israel, to those whose hearts are pure.” ( Psalm 71:31)  ” Why do you ask me who is good? Jesus replied.  There is only One that is good.”  (Matthew 19:17)  ”whatever is good and perfect comes from god above.” (James 1:17)  The Bible says that God alone is good and that any good that we do comes from God.

I know, you are probably asking why bad things happen if our God is good.  God has given each and everyone of us the gift of free will.  We have the ability to choose.  We can choose to do right or we can choose to do wrong.  If we take a closer look around us we would realize that the majority of the evil in this world is due to the choices we make.  So the next time something bad happens lets not be too quick to blame God for it.  God is good all the time.  He cannot change, for God is God.

Stress Relief

September 30th, 2008 | Article by cupcakes4me | Health, Men's Issues, Women's Issues

Stress is something that at one point or another, will affect our lives. It can affect us in many ways, including emotionally, physically, and mentally. Some symptoms of stress are headaches, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, body aches, dizziness and the list goes on. In this article, I will tell you of a few ways to relieve stress from your daily lives.

1. Exercise- Going for a brisk walk or doing a work out video at home is a good way of relieving stress. If you have a pet, take him or her with you on a hike or to the park, that way the both you can get in some exercise for the day.

2. Massage- A good back rub is always great for when you feel the tension of stress. Go to a massage parlor or get your partner to give you a good old fashion rub down. A bit of oil or cream will make the massage feel better.

3. Talking- Give your friends or relatives a phone call. Having a conversation will a loved one is also helpful when dealing with stress. I always call my mom when I feel stressed out and after awhile of venting, I feel better. Going out to lunch with a friend or loved one is also a good idea. Eat, laugh, and talk, you will feel better by the time your done.

4. Taking a hot bath or shower- Turn on some  scented candles and melt away the stress in a hot bath or a long hot shower. Relax and clear your mind of everything for awhile.

5. Reading a book- I like to take at least 1 hour out of my day to read a book or my bible. I usually wait until I put my baby down for a nap. Reading helps to relax me, even if it’s a little at a time.

6. Take a nap- I know that sometimes there is no time for a nap but, even a 30 minute nap works wonders to relieve stress. Our bodies and minds need a time out every once in awhile and a nap is the perfect remedy.

7. Write in a journal or diary- Keeping a journal or a diary is another excellent way to relieve stress. Go ahead and write down all the things that are bothering you. A lot of the times we don’t want others to know our personal business so writing them down is a good way to vent our worries.

8. Gardening- Doing some gardening or yard work is good for stress relief and at the same time your property will look presentable. If you make a garden, you will not only get rid of stress, you will also get rewarded with fruits and vegetables or some beautiful flowers if you don’t want a vegetable garden.

Places to Write at to Maximize Your Profit Potential

September 30th, 2008 | Article by lauriehomebusiness | Business and Finance, Career, Marketing, Writing
Contents are always needed everyday and there are lots of places that are looking for writers. There are places online that I know of that are looking for writers so take advantage of these places that I recommend. Whether you are a stay at home parent, college student, in the baby boomer age, this is one of the ways to make extra money with all doing it at home. I will give you a list of places to apply and sign up for plus ideas that I had come across of and ideas of my own to help you maximize the articles that you have there whether published or not. To start off, I will give you places to sign up as a writer and then will give you my ideas on how you can make more money than just doing what you are doing for each places.

1. <a href=”http://www.associatedcontent.com/user/311442/laurie_tam.html”>Associated Content</a href>

This site is one of the most wonderful places to publish your own articles and they sometimes have extra incentives when you sign up. For example, I just signed up on September 8 and if I publish at least 5 articles, I could get an extra $10 bonus added. For the articles that are not published, you can get an upfront payment plus $1.50 for every thousand page views. It’s passive income with this one. Even if you have already published your previous articles somewhere else, you can take advantage of display only which you get $1.50 for every 1000 views but you don’t qualify for the upfront payment option.

2. <a href=”http://www.ehow.com”>Ehow</a href>

Ehow’s compensation plan on how they determine how much to give you is a mystery but what they based it on was how many people view each of the articles and by popular demands. The more the better at getting more money. Payment to you is only through paypal and the least amount to cashout is $10 USD. Unfortunately, this one only applied to US residents for right now.

3. <a href=”//lauriehomebusiness.articleincome.com”>Article Income</a href>

This site pays you by either paypal, check or wire transfer. You earn points for each time you write a article on there as well as comment on other people’s too. I don’t know all the details from there but join under me if you are interested in joining this.

4. <a href=”http://www.neowide.com”>Neowide</a href>

One of the newest sites where they pay you for per articles that you have. You get in between $1-$10 depending what topics are in demand of what on there. Despite that you don’t make passive income, this is a neat site to make some extra money for each of your published articles that you

have there. They pay you with Paypal and in order to cashout, have to have at least $50 USD.

5. <a href=”http://www.xomba.com/referral/777a99fb”>Xomba</a href>

You earn points for each of your articles that you write there. And you have google adsense to

help you make money too. Even though I just signed up on there, I thought to network with others on there. Don’t just do it for the money but network in order to help each other out if you can. This is like writer’s helping each other and there is a link to click on for Writer’s World.

6. <a href=”http://www.demandstudios.com”>Demand Studios</a href>

This site have writing jobs where you can choose to do either ehow (which I am a member of on there) and Livestrong. Of what I read from someone else, you get paid $15 each of writing an article on ehow. I think they pay you with paypal but someone else I read have been successful with this.

7. <a href=”http://www.livestrong.com”>LiveStrong</a href>

I don’t know much about this one but also like ehow, Demand Studios give you this option too to write for this company. But the thing is that it can only be published on here and you would have to look and see what they want you to write about. No materials that you publish your articles at are allowed to be used at livestrong and the articles have something to do with health and fitness. See if this one will fit you.

8. <a href=”http://www.constant-content.com”>Constant Content</a href>

I am not a member on here but what I know is that you are selling your pieces to whoever is willing to buy any of your articles which you get to set your own prices.

9. <a href=”http://www.examiner.com>Examiner</a href>

You get paid $2.50 for every thousand views. You don’t get any upfront money for any contents that was never publish but this is another place to make some money. I am already accepted to be one of their writers and the requirement to do that is that you have to write at least 3 times a week so then you would be active and still be online.

I will also be updating this article to give you all the inside scoop of what I know. As for me to tell you how to maximize each of your articles so then you can get as much money as you can for each one, here it is. For the already published ones, post them at places where you have the rights to publish them at anywhere you want. As for the ones where you have no rights to do that, do not publish it at other places.

One guy I read suggested that to join constant content and write articles for them and after selling it, have it up at Associated Content. At associated content, you have three different options whether they have total rights to your article(s), AC have some rights but you want to publish it at other places (which I recommend) or use the pieces that you have already published and only qualify for the display only option.

Another person I read stated that what she did was write for associated content and then sell it at Helium. helium is another site where you get paid to write which isn’t much. Triond is another place to write for. I don’t know much about that one but I am also a member on there.

And as for my own idea, I write for AC and then post it up at ehow and Neowide to maximize my articles profit potential.

I hope you enjoy and learning what I have written on here. It was fun giving you all my ideas on how to do that.

Use Risk And Trouble To Make Boredom into Board Fun

September 30th, 2008 | Article by paradox | Family, Recreation and Leisure, Relationships

Board games are one of the most popular pastimes in America and around the world. They are a great way for parents, children and couples to have fun together, while strengthening family bonds. And are fantastic learning tools for children and adults alike.

Games like Monopoly, Risk, Life, Clue, and Candyland are proven winners when it comes to family fun. And are a great way for parents to provide learning experiences for their children that are interesting, interactive and most importantly, fun. Board games emphasize skills like math, reasoning, logic, and various social skills. As do other forms of activity, board games can represent nearly any subject.

There are many different types and styles of board games, including those, at the most basic level, that that have no inherent theme such as Checkers as well as more complicated games with definite subjects, or even narratives, like Clue. Most board games involve both luck and strategy. One way to categorize board games is to distinguish those based primarily upon luck from those that involve significant strategy. Most board games for children are based on luck, such as a spin of the wheel or roll of the dice to move forward on to the goal of winning.

Educational board games can be fun and useful tools in the classroom and in a homeschool setting. So, the next time your kids start complaining about school work, maybe it’s time to take a break, pull out that old Scrabble game and have some fun together. Games will also encourage knowledge and interest in our world and others.

As with most toys, choosing board games for kids is mostly a matter of finding something suitable to their age. Some are meant just for kids, others for adults, and many can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Educational software and games are perfect for your kids. Introduce your kids to some old favorites, like Scrabble, which has players rearrange their chosen letters to find new words that can connect with letters of already played words and Pictionary, a game that has players convey the meaning of a word without using letters but instead by drawing pictures. Break out the popcorn as you and your children play a kids board game that will create memories and family bonding.

Board games are by far more entertaining than video games, at least in my experiences. And are a great way to pass the time and spend a fun evening with your loved ones. Board games are also a wonderful way to relieve everyday stress. Games that will be played repeatedly for years to come will be well worth the money spent, and the memories of laughter will be priceless.

Besides Trick or Treating

September 30th, 2008 | Article by LizD | Family, Recreation and Leisure

As sad as it is to say, with the world the way it is these days, some parents just do not feel safe allowing their kids to trick or treat on Halloween.  That doesn’t mean that the children have to miss out on the holiday though.  Here are some  fun activities that parents can share with their kids to celebrate Halloween.

If there’s still time parents can get in contact with their kid’s school to set up some fun Halloween activities. The school can help through a Halloween party or even a Halloween dance.  How much fun does a Monster’s Ball sound to you?  The school gymnasium could even be turned into a creepy haunted house.  Kids who show up at the haunted house in costume get to go through the haunted house for free!

Parents can even throw a Halloween party at their own home for their children’s friends and/or local neighborhood kids.  You could have your kids help you with all the preparations; making decorations, witch’s brew punch, cookies and other treats.

What about local corn mazes, haunted houses and pumpkin patches.  Have you ever tried to wait for the Great Pumpkin?  Chances are your little ones will enjoy waiting, for a reasonable amount of time of course.

Children have very active imaginations.  If you plant the seed and help them out, you’ll find that any of these activities will make for a very fun Halloween for you and your kids!
