How is diabetes treated? Diabetes is a chronic disease and there’s no cure but there’s good treatment measures to control the disease. Diabetes is treated by having the patients take oral medication and insulin subcutaneous injections. The patient will reduce glucose intake, exercise more and lose weight. The patient will stop smoking also because smoking will affect their condition. Severely obese patient with type II diabetes are suggested to have gastric bypass surgery. The patient’s glucose level will return to 80-100% of the normal value once the surgery is done. The successful rate is very high and this is the leading method to treat diabetes type II. Gastric bypass surgery can be fatal for 2% of the population. 2% of the population that had the surgery have died over surgery complications.

Treatment for diabetes Mellitus.

  • Chronic disease- without a cure. So far there’s no cure but only treatment measures like taking oral medication and taking subcutaneous shots. Type II diabetes will be normalized if patient undergo gastric bypass surgery.

  • Treatment goal is to avoid short term and long term complications. The complications could be keto-acidosis of glucose level over 400 mg/dl. The patient can be in a coma and die because of keto-acidosis. Long term complications could be poor wound healing and the patient can have gangrene developed and the extremities need to be amputate. It’s important that patient don’t injure themselves too much because they will have a hard time healing.

  • Patient need to learn about their treatment regimen. It’s imperative that patient know their treatment plan like taking oral medication and taking sq shots on time and regularly like the prescription says. Patient will also exercise and stay away from high glucose food and smoking.

  • Patient need to exercise, monitor glucose level, keeping glucose at acceptable values.
  • The normal value is 80-120mg/dl. Sometimes acceptable values can be up to 140mg/dl. The zone of 400mg/dl is when you need to be admit to the emergency room because you can die from keto-acidosis. If your blood sugar is this high (400mg/dl), then you need to get to the hospital right away.
  • Patient need to take oral medication or insulin injection
  • Quit smoking
  • Wear diabetic socks
  • Diabetic shoes
  • Reduce blood pressure

Type I diabetes cure

  • There is no cure for type I diabetes
  • Possible pancreas transplant – the body may not accept the transplant well and patient need to take immuno-suppressant drug for long term
  • Transplant of beta cells

  • Stem cells raised of beta cells to be transplant- this method has a lower rejection rate and patient don’t need immuno-suppressant medication
  • Patient doesn’t need insulin once they have the stem cells beta cells transplant.

Cure for Diabetes II

  • Condition will be normal once they receive gastric bypass surgery.
  • Gastric bypass surgery will return glucose level back to 80-100% of normal value
  • Patients need to exercise, lose weight, cut down sugar intake, and take medication as prescribed
