Autumn is a Sleeping Pill

Autumn is suddenly here. Many become tired and depressed,and it can be almost impossible to get out of the bed in the morning. It is easy to feel like a bad person,when you just want to stay under the covers.Many people can only leave the bed and take some breakfast. But for others, it can be impossible.
The sleep hormone melatonin is like a strong sleep pill. 20% of the population have so much melatonin in the brain in the winter,that they have big problems to get out of the bed. Like all mammals, we human beings have a built-in clock, which controls the body´s rhythms, and it depends on the light.
The eye told the rest of the body how much light that comes in, regulated production of sleep and awake hormones.
When autumn comes, and it gets darker, the body set up to sleep, and we are tired.
For a couple of 100 years ago, it was natural for people in Sweden to get to bed at 6 o´clock in the evening, and get up in the brightening.
But in the late 1800´s came the electricity, and we broke with the nature.
Some tips to counteract an autumn depression is:
* Seasonal affective disorder are often treated with light therapy or pharmacological treatment.
* Other possibilities that have been successful, is to change diet. For example vegan food or corn flakes, which has anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effect.
* Try to move to the south and the sun, this dark season. Or take a trip to the sun.
* Spend more time outdoors during the day light hours.
* Do regular exercises every day.
* Use good lighting, bot at home and at work. Skylights give the best light, because they spread the light up the ceiling.
* When you sit with your computer, don´t sit in a dark room.
* Try to make a soft start every morning. Switch off the lights in the bedroom, and lay still in the bed for a short time before you go up.
