Who’se kid it is anyway?

November 6th, 2008 | Article by winnie295 | Family, Health, Relationships

Who decides when a parent needs to let go?  We recently ran into this situation a few weeks ago.  Our daughter is 22 years old and she just moved out.  She took ill one day and needed to go to the ER.  She does not have a car, so she called mom and dad.  We ended up sitting for many hours in the ER with her.  My husband was scheduled to work that day, so, from the ER, he called his supervisor to let her know that he would be late as he is in he ER with his daughter and the docs can’t figure out what is wrong with her.  The supervisor said fine, just keep me updated.  When we finally got out of the ER and were on our way home, my husband called his supervisor again to let her know that since there was only about 2 hours of work left, he would take this as a vacation day.  You see, we live an hour from his work, so by the time he would have gotten there, he would have worked an hour then turned around and went home.

My husband went in to work the next day and was called into the office.  He was told that if it has nothing to do with his wife or handicapped son that lives at home, he is not to take off of work.  They said that “your daughter no longer lives at home and is an adult now and has to learn to take care of herself.”  I was appalled when my husband came home and told me this.  So, in other words, if my other two kids who do not live at home anymore are dying, then he can go to them and take off of work to care for them.  Yeah right!

Who decided that they were the authority on parenting.  Who are they to tell me when to let go of my kids?   l love my kids and they mean the world to me.  They always will.  If they are sick or not, I am going to go to them whenever they need me.  Yes, they have to learn to live on their own, and they are, that doesn’t mean that I can’t help them out once in a while.  Especially when it comes to their health.  I think was my husband supervisor did was uncalled for.  Let see what she does the next time one of her kids gets sick and has to go to the ER.

Exercising and Cancer

October 31st, 2008 | Article by Felrna | Health

After being diagnosed with cancer I needed to work out more.  I needed to find something that would help me get the exercise he wanted me to have, but not over exert myself too much which I was still going through chemotherapy.  It didn’t take much for me to get really tired after a chemotherapy treatment, but I knew that exercising just a little would go a long way for my recovery and helping me maintain some weight after the treatments were over.  Exercise can help regulate weight, and most importantly help keep you healthy and strong.  While my immune system was weak and barely there exercise helped give me energy and I could feel better the more I do it.  The energy exercising gave me allowed me to be able to do the things I loved more.  I was able to walk down the aisle when my best friend got married, because I exercised a little each day.  Exercising can give you that extra boost to do more and try to be more of the person you used to be before getting diagnosed with cancer.  I remember feeling like a part of me was lost, but when I would exercise I felt like I got a little more of myself back.  But the point was I needed to find something that would work for me.

So what did I start to do?  I started to do yoga.  It was the perfect thing for me to start doing because I was able to do some of the poses while I was sitting or laying in bed.  I didn’t need to really exert myself all that much, but I was still exercising and stretching and toning my muscles even though I was sick.  It didn’t take a lot of work and strength to do different poses.  I was able to lay in bed and use my arms to pull my legs closer to my chest in an effort to stretch my hamstrings.  The more I did yoga the better I felt, the better my appetite came back.  The more I ate and worked out the less sick I felt.  I felt like I was able to conquer anything because I was feeling so much better.  Sure I was still sick and I still got tired and weak a lot, but I still felt great because I was able to do more than I normally would simply because I tried to do yoga, even a little bit each night before bed or in the morning when I woke up.

There are poses that help your respiratory system which was good because my doctor told me that certain medication in my chemotherapy treatments would effect my lungs, so the stronger my lungs were the easier it would be for them to fight against the toxins that could have damaged them.  Doing yoga didn’t just make my lungs and muscles stronger, but my whole body.  It was easier for my body to fight against the toxins from the chemotherapy, the infections from the cancer as well as just strengthening itself.  I honestly think that I got better quicker because I was working out a little bit.  I think the more I worked out, I was helping my body be able to attack and respond to the cancerous cells within my body.  I did try some of the standing poses that are a little harder than sitting and laying down poses.  When I did poses like downward dog, I could feel my blood pressure getting better and I saw it when my nurse took my blood pressure.

Since I was working out throughout my treatments it was easier to step up the workouts after the treatments were over.  It was easier to get into a routine and I found my body wasn’t being so resistant to doing different things like walking a long while.  Granted I felt some pressure and pain after walking say a mile, but it still felt good, I was able to do it and now after several months I can walk farther without the pain.  I was able to focus my attention on working out more because I had already started a little while I was going through treatments.  I maintained a healthy weight throughout the treatments and was able to increase it and maintain it afterward.  Exercising more helps give me an edge and helps keep me healthy as it brings oxygen and stuff to my muscles and organs that they need.  The more you work out the more oxygen and things get to your body and the better it functions through daily activities.

Yoga is such a great exercise because you can do so much without straining your body.  You can tone and strengthen your body without causing pain to yourself, unless you do a pose wrong, which I did and it can be painful.  While I was working out I was able to get rid of body fat and create muscle fat, so the weight that I put on was all good fat.  I look and feel a lot better than I did before I was diagnosed and I think that has to do in part because I have been doing yoga and some other exercises.  Yoga makes your body stronger and tone.  It also has other benefits such as bringing oxygen to your muscles, strengthening different bodily systems and opening different areas that might be tight.  Because there is a focus on listening to your body, I learned how to listen to mine and realize when something was wrong, or when something got better.  I knew what kind of foods I needed to eat and what I needed to drink: milk, water, teas, because I became more in tuned with my body and how it functions.

Another thing that yoga has helped me learn was how to focus on breathing and regulate it more.  The more I did yoga and breathed a certain way I was able to hold my breath longer for the pulmonary tests as well as when I needed to hold my breath for the CT Scans.  Also when I was getting the treatments, I learned that if I breathed a certain way, I felt less nausea and I was able to block out the pain when I got shots and blood work.  Doing yoga through my cancer treatments had so many benefits.  One of the big things was I was able to sit still during radiation and I learned how to hold still and not move which could have been dangerous.  Because I strengthened my arms and shoulders as well I didn’t get pains in them when I held them above my head for fifteen minutes which was how long my radiation treatment was.  I felt strong and I am stronger because of the yoga that I did throughout my treatments.

Now that my treatments are over I am still doing yoga, going for walks on the treadmill as well as Pilates each day.  The more I do the healthier I feel and I think I improve my chances of not having a relapse.  Sure cancer is unpredictable, but exercising and eating right help reduce the risks.  I find myself with a better energy and a healthier appetite.  Yoga has helped my life so much and helped me deal with the stress and emotions related to having cancer.  I still need to exercise and keep myself healthy, so I will keep doing yoga and of course add some extra things into it.  I told my doctor I have been doing yoga and he was very happy.  For anyone who needs to deal with the stresses of cancer, yoga might be the exercise for you.  There are moves you can do while laying down or sitting, so you can do them in bed and you won’t overexert yourself while doing it.

ADRENALINE is a BOON or BANE?

October 31st, 2008 | Article by kiran | Culture and Society, Health

*Before 10,000 years ago I was living in a cave in the forest. After spending a day in hunting I was returning back to my cave and shocked to see a big LION sitting in my cave. Then my brain gave me two options either to fight or run away from the scene (“fight or flight situation”). Then I stated running and I survived from that situation. Thanks to ADRENALINE which helped me. But today I have fear of crossing a busy road, I have fear of speaking to a gathering, I have fear of losing my job… But this time I HATE THIS ADRENALINE which is causing so many problems related to health and day by day my life span is getting reduced. IS ADRENALINE A BOON OR BANE?

*Adrenaline is produced by Adrenal glands when fight or flight situation occur. When it is produced it stimulates the heart beat, dilates blood vessels and air passages, breathing rate increases lot of oxygen is taken by the blood to the muscles. Oxygen rate to brain gets reduced and also has a number of minor problems at that moment.

*Ancestral days, a man is to be lived in forest along with a number of other dangerous animals. Surviving in that world is the major challenge. In order to survive a lot of physical support is required in order to fight or run away things. At that time Adrenaline helps to pump blood in to the muscles and it is dissipated in a physical activity.

*In our modern life surviving for life is not a big problem. We are living in a society where the average life span is around 60-70 years. No need to fight against anybody in order to survive daily. But when a fearful situation occurs such as speaking in front of a gathering or loosing your job, brain commands the adrenal glands to pump adrenaline in to the body. But we do not perform any sort of fight or flight situation (physical effort) adrenaline remains in the body causing insomnia and other heart related problems.

*Today in our modern day life adrenaline is mostly a BANE but one should remember that it plays a prominent role in the existence of our species.

How to Get Rid of Stretch Marks

October 30th, 2008 | Article by Alien | Beauty, Health, Women's Issues

Stretch marks are common among women and especially among pregnant women. Stretch marks are also common with teenage girls going through major hormonal and weight changes. You will have stretch marks if you gain weight too quickly or lose it too quickly.

Either way no one likes stretch marks because they are not attractive and hard to get rid of. It’s difficult to get rid of stretch marks once they’re there. They have their purple stage and then their white stage which is the last stage. You will see the indentation through your skin. This makes it hard for us to wear bikini because it will show through.

You can try to get help for it. The best thing is to not lose or gain weight too quickly but it looks like there’s not much that we can do about preventing it because we just don’t know when it’ll come up. Even thin people have stretch marks problems.

What can you do to get rid of it? It gets better over time though. It looks less visible and the color fades away even though you will still see the scars. This stage is harder to treat though. The best things to do are to prevent it by using moisturizers as much as possible on your body. The more lotions you use the less skin will break about. They say to hydrate your skin with plenty of water too as this will give your skin a lesser chance of breaking.

Once you have so much of it there is not much that you can do unless you get like a tummy tuck or something to cut it out. One thing you can do is to dress so that it’s all cover up and don’t wear bikini if you don’t want to show it. You can use a wrap to wrap the hip area. There are plenty of over the counter treatment but only some of them work said the experts. One of them is wheat germ and this is a home remedy. They said that there is no finding that wheat germs work to get rid of stretch marks.

Glycolic acid seems to help and it’s derived from sugar cane. It helps your skin produce more collagen. This will require several visits to the doctor’s office. It’s a member of the alpha hydroxyl acid. It usually cost around $100. Vitamin C works a little bit and it’s derived from Vitamin C. You can combine it with glycolic acid for a more effective treatment. Taking vitamin C pills also helps. Vitamin C only works in the early stage of the stretch marks.

Relastin a peptide product has been said to be ineffective because there are no data to support its effectiveness. Retinoids also helps but it works only for the early stages of the stretch marks. A combination of retinoids, glycolic acid and vitamin C has been shown to give some improvement on stretch marks. Laser treatment works well for any stages of stretch marks. Laser treatment is costly per sessions. They are as much as $450 and up to $1000.

Sleep Disorder Due to another Mental Disorder

October 29th, 2008 | Article by insulin | Health

Introduction

There are many reasons why a person can’t sleep and we need to look for a way on how to prevent this. This may cause discomfort and overstress to all parts of our body that will result into illness and mental disorders. We need to know why this happens and how it will be prevented.

Insomnia- It is related to a major psychiatric condition. You will experience difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep or nonrestorative sleep for at least one month that is associated with daytime fatigue or impaired daytime functioning. I myself suffers to insomnia and the best thing to do is to make yourself tired.. Read more books, plan lots of activities or keep yourself so busy and then if you really feel sleepy then sleep.

Hypersomnia - It is related to major psychiatric condition. Excessive sleepiness for at least one month as evidenced by either prolonged sleep episodes or daytime sleep episodes that occur almost daily. This case is really difficult because you will not really feel the stress and sleepiness for 24 hours and to be able to sleep, you need to visit your doctor for what sleeping pills will be good for you. I am using Iterax for 4 years and this antihistamine really helps me to sleep.

Drugs use in anxiety and sleep disorders

BARBITURATES - They are primarily indicated for insomnia and agitation through benzodiapines are better choice. They are also drug-assisted interviews but again benzodiazepines may be a better choice. They can induce the metabolism of a lot drugs so adjustments in dosage may be necessary. It is useful for seizure disorders.

Antihistamines - As what I’ve said I while ago, I am using iterax and it is one of the best medicines for sleeping disorder especially diphenhydramine, which is used for sedation, drug-induced, dytonias, akinesia.

Buspirone - for generalized anxiety disorder.

New healthcare discoveries

October 29th, 2008 | Article by Alien | Health

Medical breakthrough will advance human health and longevity. The healthcare research teams are always trying to make new discoveries. Within the last ten years we have seen so many changes in medical breakthrough and one most notable one is that we can even cure the blinds. Yes! This is exciting news for those who can’t see but the procedure might be costly though. This discovery of gene therapy was made in London.

They have been testing this procedure on human after successful treatment in dogs. They have been able to restore eyes sights for dogs. They are saying that these trials in human are successful as well in helping them detect lights. So far this is one of the most useful pieces of discoveries for the human populations and animals as well. The procedure is done by doctors who will be using a virus vector to carry the gene that will help the eyes recover and detect light. This virus will be inserted at the back of the eye.

Lately on the News there have been other discoveries that there is a goat weed plant that will help erectile dysfunction. It works the same ways as Viagra but will probably be more natural. There are things out there that work like Viagra but have less of an effect such as Ginkgo Biloba. Fish oil seems to have a certain effects too but it’s milder comparing to Viagra. These things can be experience by personal use or research.

The next time that you took something just observes it for byproduct or something profound and shares it with the world. Who knows your observation could be a breakthrough like the mold Penicillin that was observed by scientists. Great discoveries can be from personal experience with the medicine or procedure because after all no one will know it better than the users. They use people to study the effects of drugs and procedure and therefore you should report anything peculiar so that further examination could take place.

Research and personal or citizen discoveries are the tools that advance the healthcare industries. Sometimes years of research will not be as beneficial as one personal observation. Pay attention to things as you do them and reap its benefits. One thing I have observed with my personal use of Ginkgo Biloba is that it restores some of the function that I’m slow at. For example, I used to not talk a lot.

I would say a couple of words but that’s about it. It seems like my speech nerve is lazy or that I’m overwhelmed or stressed out and didn’t want to talk but when I started taking Ginkgo I begin to talk more than my usual rate and I was very fast when responding to people whereas before I wouldn’t talk or respond fast to people. I didn’t feel like it or just couldn’t. Sometimes the nerves are lazy and don’t want to work and Ginkgo help those nerves of mine.

I was thinking that if it helped me in this way maybe it could also work in people with problems like me or similar nerves problems where they don’t want to talk or slow at moving around. What will happen if they take Ginkgo? Maybe they will move around more and talk more and their nerves will be more active and replenished. I think that this is a big possibility. Ginkgo is just a natural substance made from plants and it doesn’t have many harmful side effects but it does have a few precautions with existing medical conditions of the heart or blood disorders. These things have to be evaluated by your doctors and sometimes Ginkgo is not suitable for you because it may cause you to bleed more or even increase your blood pressure. However, this is fine for a healthy person who doesn’t have any medical problem.

I think this could be beneficial for people who have substance abuse that caused them nerves damage. Maybe when taking Ginkgo their nerves will revive and work better because it’s getting more replenishment. The function of Ginkgo is to increase blood flow to our brain and body. Blood is the main food supply source for our body. Blood carries most of the nutrients that our body needs such as oxygen, iron, and glucose and so on. Some people have problems because they don’t have sufficient blood flows.

Diabetics have to amputate their legs because they don’t have sufficient blood flow for wound healings. A lot of medical conditions out there don’t have sufficient blood flow and this could be a good supplement for them. Sure there are drugs out there to reverse the effect of blood disorder but they have side effects whereas Ginkgo is more natural and it’s just a supplement. Blood supply to your brain can wake up some of those nerves that are lazy. It’s a possibility. The new discovery of gene therapy to cure the blind is great one.

Viruses that beat brain cancer

October 29th, 2008 | Article by Alien | Health

New medical advances are always exciting and they have plenty of them. One of the breakthroughs that people are working on is embryonic stem cells therapy. This is a controversial topic in America because it’s a question of ethics.

The government in America is only funding Adult stem cells research. Adult stem cells research is great but it’s limited in some ways whereas embryonic stem cells are not that limiting. However, embryonic stem cells research will provides us with many different types of treatment options for all types of medical conditions. It’ll save a lot of people’s lives. This is something that the next president has to ponder about.

One really great breakthrough recently is on October, 27, 2008 where they have a new method to battle brain cancer. This is a profound method that you’ve never heard of before and it’s very creative. Once you know about it you will be surprise as to how far medical research can take you.

You begin to question whether the method can be use for treating other diseases as well such as HIV something that we are all desperate for. We want a cure to HIV or a vaccine at least. What if we take some of the methods that have been successful for other medical condition and see if we can apply that toward finding a cure or a vaccine for HIV?

The recent discovery was a method that would nearly cure brain cancer. It’s definitely profound. This is a treatment that is going on at the Methodist health hospital on Houston. The procedure is being giving to qualified candidates. The procedure is to use two viruses to battle the brain cancer.

One is the herpes virus and the other one is the cold virus. Whoa! This is fascinating. Taking two viruses and putting it inside your body to kill cancer. This is an amazing method. Can we do this to kill the HIV? Can we take a combination of virus and things and introduce it inside the cell and get rid of it? Just a question on the side. They said that the question that you ask is already half way done when it comes to research. So you have to ask a lot of questions and build your research around it.

What they are doing is to use the common cold virus to deliver the herpes virus to the cancer cells and then using herpes medication to kill those cancer cells that has the herpes virus. This works for one of the patient that nearly dies over her brain cancer. She has almost had all of her cancer cells destroyed.

This is great news for those who have brain cancer. They can apply for this study and get treatment before they die. They said that brain cancer will allow you to live up for several months to a couple of years. You don’t have a lot of time like other diseases. This is more life threatening. If you have brain cancer or someone you know this is something that you can look into. This is a great breakthrough.
