Halloween with Kids

Article about: halloween, kids

My eldest absolutely loves Halloween (may have something to do with all the candy!) I try to make it as enjoyable as I can for her, especially now she is at the age where she needs to be kept busy (she is 6). I found the following helps.

Give the kids the option of making their own Halloween costume, however I always tend to buy one just in case it does not go to plan with the home made one. They may want to make a costume completely off topic to Halloween, but I encourage it all the same as they are still being creative.

When trick-or-treating try to do it as early in the evening as possible, especially if the next day is a school day and they still have to get up. Round up a few friends to go with as it makes it more enjoyable for them and at least you will have some company on your travels.

Make sure snacks are at hand when you get home, for example a couple of sandwiches and some other nibbles and it is guaranteed they will eat it because of the candy they have to eat afterward. When sorting out candy do not let them have it all at once, as it will be eaten all at once. Keep some out of reach in a bowl and it can be handed out over several days.

It is a good idea to keep a bowlful of sweets handy for when trick or treaters come knocking your door. The last thing you want is dried egg on your windows in the morning. It may also be worthwhile to buy a multi-pack of cheap little toys to mix up with the sweets to offer an alternative to kids knocking.

Find some Halloween stories, but not too scary otherwise could cause problems for your child trying to get to sleep. I find putting on The Nightmare Before Christmas works. Not only is it great for Halloween, it also works well for Christmas too.

So, have an enjoyable, fun happy halloween!!
