Children love Halloween. The candy, costumes, and fun make for a great time. Parents want their children to have fun, but they also want them to stay safe. Here are some suggestions for keeping your children safe on Halloween.
· Use a flashlight while trick-or-treating. Whether you are going along, or the children are by themselves, someone should have a flashlight. Having more than one wouldn’t hurt. Being able to see things in the dark is very important for safety.
· Check all candy before your children eat it. Look for signs of rewrapping, tears in the paper, and odd smells. Anything that looks the least suspicious should be thrown out.
· Make sure the children have some light colored clothing, or reflector tape on. This allows cars to see them more clearly.
· Pair smaller children with an older buddy. The older child can hold the hand of the smaller and watch out for cars, dogs, and dangerous people.
· Give the children a cell phone for emergency calls. This will bring comfort to the children and adults alike.
· Talk with children before they head out. Explain the dangers they should watch for such as cars, dogs, and staying in lighted areas. Talking to them right before they leave will make the information more memorable.
These tips will help keep children safe while allowing them to still enjoy Halloween.
