Surviving depression: The first steps to recovery
Depression is something that quite a lot of people have to deal with in their lives, whether they are suffering from it directly or whether they are in contact with a sufferer, it can be one of the hardest diseases to cope with and one of the hardest diseases to treat.
Many people wrongly believe that depression is simply feeling sad occasionally or getting angry, yes it has these emotions but depression is an illness, one that is wide spread and can directly or indirectly effect people of all ages and genders, whether you are happy and successful in your life or not.
Signs of depression
- Lack of appetite
- Increase of appetite
- Weight gain/weight loss
- Feeling tired
- Feeling angry
- More emotional
- Tearful
- Insomnia
- Pessimism
- Suicidal
Sufferers from depression may have all or some of the above symptoms and can also be anxious and sometimes even turn to self mutilation as a release from daily stresses.
Depression is not something that can be cured but it can be helped and controlled, there are various types of depression, some more severe than others such as manic depression and schitzophrenia but they can all be helped.
If you are a sufferer of depression then you may feel like life is not worth living, you may feel angry at the world and at yourself or you just might not be coping, but you do not have to be alone… there are many people out there who want to help and who care even though you might not feel that there is.
Depression is all consuming and it may feel like you are never going to be happy again but you will be, the first step to getting better is to realise that you have a problem and to get the help you need, this is the biggest and hardest part of depression.
If you are dealing with a loved one who has depression then you may be feeling lost, insignificant because no matter what you do, nothing seems to help but the best thing that you can do for the person is to be there for them to talk to when they need it and to support them and love them unconditionally no matter how hopeless it might seem. You are an important factor in them getting better.

Once you have taken the first steps then you are on your way to surviving, but remember to take each day as it comes and it is alright to have bad days, just remember to make sure that you do not forget the good days because as time goes on there will be more of them than the bad days.
Good luck
