Most people wouldn’t think of a cat having allergies, after all they eat rodents. One of severe forms of allergies a cat can develop or be born with is an allergy to wheat products. It sounds simple enough, you just wont buy cat food made with wheat in it. It is a lot harder than you can believe to try and find brands that don’t contain wheat or wheat gluten in the ingredients. You’ll find wheat even in most cat treats. You have to go with an organic brand usually to skip the wheat in cat food.
Cats have different reactions to wheat allergies just like people do in their severity. The reaction can be weight loss, hair loss, vomiting, but the worst reaction I’ve personally seen was hemorrhaging. If you suspect your cat doesn’t like his food it may not be just because he is finicky but his brand of food could literally be making him ill. If your cat is eating a wheat based cat food and vomits shortly after eating you may have an allergy at work. Try switching his food to an organic blend using rice and vegetables with chicken. It is easier on their digestive system and if stops vomiting and gains his weight back you can consider a wheat allergy.
If your cat has a severe reaction to wheat you’ll know it fairly soon. The cat with be hungry but vomit shortly after eating, be irritable, lose weight and possible hair and the worst most severe symptom will be to find blood in his litter box. I’m not talking about a small drop here or there but blood in the box and on the floor with runny stools. This is life-threatening at this stage. You must switch his food immediately to an organic brand without wheat or beef products. Next you rebuild his system with vitamins and plenty of fresh water. You may have to put your cat on a special vet only cat food called ZD by Purina for a month just to rebuild his system. It costs last time I used it eighteen dollars for a four pound bag!
You may wonder why I included taking the beef product away along with the wheat? It is because the wheat has already irritated the cats digestive system and the beef product would be to harsh on his now sensitive stomach and could produce more vomiting. It is best to feed your cat a balanced cat food with rice, vegetables, chicken or fish. You should be aware though that not every cat likes fish!
