When Disaster Strikes
Disasters not only hurt the human body and soul, but also the properties in hold. People, therefore, need to be alert for a disaster, even at an odd hour, especially those living in areas prone to natural disasters like flood or storm. Apart from getting the house insured against flood, storm, and fire; the following should be considered:

At the time of construction of the house, take the advise of a specialist.
Instruct all the adults and children to switch off the gas and other electrical appliances and disconnect the switches.
Keep a ladder in each floor for escaping through the windows during an emergency.
Keep the life saving jackets at convenient place.
Keep ready the sandbags, in case a flood is expected. In addition, there are growing range of tested products for keeping the floodwater out of your home.
Place all the switches at a higher level.
Use storm shutters to protect your window glasses from storms. Remove the bushes and branches around the house.
Place all your important documents and valuable articles safely at one place. The family members should be able to gather these things easily before evacuating the house. In flood prone areas, keep them on the upper floor for safety.
The house should have two exit doors.
Use waterproof paint and wood.
Secure the wall studs with corrosion resistant metal connectors.
Opt for concrete floor with waterproof tiles.

The most painful aspect of any disaster is the disturbance it causes in the family life, especially in the minds of the children. Hence the following should also be considered,

Family members, including children should be asked to prepare a family disaster plan. This will make them more alert and prepared for the disasters in life. Moreover, it enables them to accept the fact that the disasters do happen.
Each member should be told beforehand to save himself first and then help others.
Install the fire extinguishers and smoke alarms and check them regularly. Put the flame-retardant shingles on the roof.
Carefully plan the evacuation route and inform every member of the family about it.
Keep handy a well-stocked first-aid box. Keep a small one in the car, as well.
Keep all the important contact numbers of doctors, fire fighters, friends, relatives, and others at a convenient and safe place within the reach of even the children.
The family members can decide upon a common meeting place, probably house of a relative. In case, the members get separated out they can meet there. Everyone should remember the contact number of this relative.
Keep ready an emergency kit containing battery-operated radio, canned food, water, credit cards, flashlights, etc.

You cannot stop the disaster, but you can handle them with your preparation, knowledge, facts, and efficiency. Thus, you can minimize your loss and maximize your safety.
