A great way to work at home via the Internet and earn money for it is to join the Mechanical Turkers site at www.mturk.com. Mechanical Turkers, affectionately known as MTurk to the people, affectionately known as Turkers, who work there, is a part of the Amazon.com family. In fact, if you’re already registered with Amazon you can use that username and password for MTurk as well.

The work available at MTurk is quite varied so you can select what you like to do best. If you like to write articles you can do that.  If you like to transcribe audio files, that’s available too. There are many other work at home jobs available and each one is called a Hit. You can browse through the Hits to find something you think you might like to do, select it and look it over a little more closely to see exactly what you will be expected to do, how long you have to complete the task, and how much money you will earn if your work is approved. If you decide to do the work, simply accept the Hit and follow the directions to complete the job. When you’re finished, submit the Hit back to the person who requested it.

Once the requester gets the Hit back, they will generally either approve and pay for it or reject it within a day or less. If you’ve followed the directions the requester posted in their Hit, your work will usually get approved and paid. They also have the option of giving you a bonus if your work is something they find outstanding. If you don’t follow directions or the job you did is not up to the standard it should be, the Hit you performed may be rejected and you won’t get paid. After working with MTurk for a few days, you’ll soon learn what is expected as well as what can cause your work to get rejected and take the proper steps to do Hits that are approved and possibly even paid bonuses.

For those who find themselves with questions about the way MTurk works, there is a wonderful Forum area where you can get all kinds of answers to all kinds of questions, post your gripes about things and get feedback from other workers. Sometimes the administrative staff of MTurk will even be posting on the Forums and answering questions or taking care of Turkers’ problems.

There is no fee to join or to perform work at home jobs on MTurk although you will incur a fee to receive your payments through your PayPal account. You can opt to have a check sent to your bank to avoid those PayPal fees. Keeping track of the money you earn for income tax purposes is up to you the worker as MTurk will not send you any tax information at the end of the year. You will receive each Sunday, however, in your email box, a statement of what you’ve earned from the previous week, which will be helpful in tracking your earnings at tax time.

Once you sign up, you’ll have your own “Dashboard” where you can see what Hits you’ve submitted, whether they’ve been approved and paid or rejected, and a total of what you’ve earned, including bonuses. Some Hits require you to qualify to work on them and this is also summarized on your Dashboard. Most qualifications simply require that you ask to be qualified, although a very few do require simple tests.

By just following their simple directions and doing work that you are capable of in a timely fashion, you should get along well at MTurk and earn some money as well. You won’t get rich but it does add up over time. You can work or not as you choose so there’s no reason to get stressed over jobs that consume too much time or are beyond your expertise. Simply enjoy your time on MTurk and make a bit of money besides. A win/win situation if there ever was one!
